If you can not set VLC to default, you can make edit to registry to start VLC when clicking on DVD drive.

Open registry:

"regedit"

-navigate to <HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\DVD\shell\play\command>

you will probably see the <(Default)> is set to “%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe” /prefetch:4 /device:DVD “%L”

-look at <HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\DVD\shell\PlayWithVLC\command>
you will see that <(Default)> is set to “C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe” –started-from-file dvd://%1

if you copy the “C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe” –started-from-file dvd://%1 to the <HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\DVD\shell\play\command> then go to the dvd drive and double click on it. you will see that VLC will start the DVD
